Abstract: Submitted in partial fulfillment of the degree of Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Abstract: This paper examines current U.S. public diplomacy efforts in the Middle East and how effective select programs are in the region. I first give an overview of U.S. public diplomacy, highlighting current public diplomacy initiatives, as well as major recommendations made post-9/11 for improvements in the field. Second, I will propose specific criteria which should be met to ensure effectiveness of U.S. public diplomacy initiatives in the Middle East. Finally, four case studies will be examined to determine effectiveness against the proposed criteria.
