Less is written, however, about the unique potential benefits of art therapy and art making with adolescents. I address this lack of research about art-making with adolescents— specifically adolescents with chronic illness— by ... read moreoffering an analysis of the existing literature on art therapy frameworks, coping theories, and the concept of adolescent identity. Because almost no research has been done on adolescents who engage in therapeutic art outside of an art therapy context, this paper presents original qualitative data on the way chronically ill adolescents use their own art making to cope with illness. I ultimately argue for a radical reframing of coping mechanisms and the use of art as an effective primary treatment to be recommended by healthcare providers. I also suggest a model of art therapy that integrates aesthetic appreciation, art making, and a regard for adolescent autonomy to create a developmentally appropriate intervention.read less
