The Department of German, Russian, and Asian Languages and Literatures came into existence prior to the 1987-1988 academic year. The size of the department has grown substantially since the time of the founding of the Department of German in 1893. The Department of German employed only two professors when it was first established. Currently, some forty faculty members are part of this department. The Department sponsors a number of foreign language houses where students studying those languages are able to live and immerse themselves in their respective languages of interest.
